POKEY (Gumby) wind-up toy

  In 1966, Lakeside manufactured two vinyl wind-up toys of Gumby and Pokey, including this one of Pokey that stands 4" tall.  Pokey is bright orange in color with a black mane and white eyes with black pupils.  He is shown sitting with his legs in front of him and his front legs/arms crossed by his chest.  When the knob is wound up, this item vibrates and bounces around in circles on any smooth, hard surface.  The wind-up mechanism and vibrating motion both work fine, but probably not as vigorously as they did when Pokey was brand new.  The bottom of this item has a cardboard covering and is the only part of the exterior that is not vinyl.  Pokey has a few very small marks on him and some light surface scratching on the bottom from bouncing all over the place.   He is in EX to EX+ condition.

POKEY (Gumby) vinyl & cloth hand puppet

  This is the ORIGINAL vinyl & cloth hand puppet of Pokey, measuring 9.25" from top to bottom.  Pokey's head is soft and undamaged.  It has some very minor paint wear but the paint generally is in very nice condition.  Pokey has four very small (1/8") green marks on his vinyl head that are of unknown origin.  The orange cotton cloth body has "Gumby's Pal Pokey" printed on it in fading but still easily-legible green lettering on the front.  There is a small (less than 1/4") fraying area on the neckline where the cloth is stitched into the vinyl puppet head.   Otherwise, the cloth is wrinkled but without damage or problems.  The original manufacturer's label is present and in great shape.  This item was manufactured by Lakeside in 1965.  Overall, it is in VG condition.  We have Pokey's counterpart piece, Gumby, in stock at this time as well.  If you decide to purchase both in a single transaction, we'll drop the purchase price for the pair to $50.

POKEY (Gumby) plush doll

  Got any unruly children you care to scare into obedience, or any post-Baby Boomers to whom you would like to give some bad childhood memories?  If you do, perhaps this item is for you!  This homely creature is a soft plush doll of Gumby's pal, Pokey.  He stands 6.5" tall and is bright orange in color, with black plush mane, black plush tail, and glued-on white-and-blue plastic eyes.  Pokey has thick wires inside of his legs, enabling them to be bent into position.  He retains his original manufacturer's label, which is in nice condition and sewn securely into his front left leg.  It indicates that Pokey was made in 1988 by Ace Novelty.  The bendy wire inside of Pokey's rear right leg occasionally pops out of his heel, but it replaces inside of the plush fairly easily.  This is this item's only flaw . . . other than its overall lack of attractiveness!

Shimmel Sons, Inc. and, although undated, probably was manufactured during the 1970s.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) magic slate

p1199082.jpg (34135 bytes)  This is a magic slate (here, it is referred to as a self-erasing clean slate) of Popeye.   So that we could provide you with a larger and clearer image of Popeye and the graphics on the header card, we did not scan the bottom 2/3 of the actual magic slate itself.  Rest assured, though, that is it present and intact even though it is not shown in the picture.  This item is 8.25" wide and 13" tall.  It was manufactured by Lowe in 1963.  The original writing stylus used to be inserted into the upper portion of the header card, on back of the card.  It is no longer present, as this toy was used by its previous owner.  Now, there is a small hole and a surrounding paper tear in that area, resulting from the original owner's efforts to get the stylus out for use.  The thin plastic liftable, erasable area is present and about 95% of it is intact.  It has mostly (but not totally) torn loose from the stapled area beneath Popeye's chin, where it attaches to the header card.  Overall, this item is in G to G+ condition.

This item works just fine and is in NM+ condition.  It was manufactured sometime during the 1960s by Kohner Brothers, and even the blue-and-silver foil label is in very nice condition.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) cast-iron bank

  This is a 9.25" cast-iron bank of Popeye.  As with many of the older items of Popeye, this one bears no copyright year so its exact age is unknown.  This bank consists of two heavy, thick cast-iron pieces that are joined together by a sunken screw in the middle of Popeye's back.  The item came with minor wear and minor rusting (primarily along the seam where the banks two halves are joined, especially around the head) when it was acquired, so it does not appear to be a recent piece.  Popeye is shown wearing a black sailor's shirt with red collar and yellow buttons, navy blue pants, yellow belt, and black shoes.  He has red raised anchors tattooed on his forearms.  Overall, this item is in VG+ condition, due to the minor paint loss and light surface rusting mentioned above.

COST = $100           BOXED WEIGHT: 5 POUNDS          ITEM NUMBER = 1197003

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) rolypoly

  This is a nifty older Popeye item.  It is a 9.5" tall plush-and-vinyl chiming rolypoly doll.  Popeye's head is made of vinyl, and shows him wearing a blue cap as he winks and has his brown pipe in his mouth.  The body is covered with a woolly plush, off-white on top and bluish-grey on the bottom.  Popeye has white felt hands (all fingers are present and undamaged), glued-on black felt strips for his pants pockets, and black felt feet.  Inside of his chubby body, there is a chime that clanks around whenever the rolypoly is batted about.  This item was manufactured by Gund sometime during the 1950s.  The original manufacturer's label is present and in very nice condition, attached securely to the bottom rear side of the rolypoly.  The vinyl is undamaged as is the plush, with very minor wear in a few very small spots.  Overall, this item is in NM- condition and is a very nice example of this difficult-to-find item.

NM to NM+ other than the fact that his pipe is missing, so this is a very nice example of this particular figure.

COST = $14           BOXED WEIGHT: <2 POUNDS           ITEM NUMBER = 0902024

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) hollow plastic figure

  This is a lightweight, hollow plastic figure of Popeye, standing 8.5" tall.  Popeye wears a white sailor's outfit with blue accents on his hat's brim, shirt collar and buttons, and pants.  Popeye's skin is dark flesh-colored and he wears black shoes.  He is shown with a can of spinach in his left hand, a white spoon in his right hand, and sitting atop a large white spinach barrel with blue bands across it.  This item is undamaged, but as the picture shows pretty well, it has a substantial amount of paint loss.  Overall, it is in G- condition.  Our best guess is that this is a 1960s item, and in all likelihood, it was one of ten "pins" used in some type of Popeye bowling set/game.  There is no copyright information on this item, so we do not know for certain who made this item or when it was manufactured.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) Christmas lights

  This is a pretty amazing find, if you ask us!  It is a set/string of 8 plastic Christmas lights featuring Popeye (and friends) . . . complete with its original box.  From left to right, the lights show Brutus pummeling Popeye (red), Wimpy trying to borrow money from Popeye (yellow), Wimpy watching Popeye touch another man's top hat (green), Popeye chasing a skipping man (blue), Popeye having recently punched Brutus to the ground (white--two like that), Popeye having punched another man to the ground (blue), and Popeye and Olive Oyl staring at a boulder (red).  The lights still work just fine after all these years.  Their box has beautiful, colorful graphics on it.  This item was manufactured by Reliance sometime during the 1930s.  The lights themselves are in NM to NM+ condition.  The box is intact with some edge and corner wear, but is very nice considering the age of the item--probably in EX- condition.  "Beautiful" and "rare" are probably the best words to describe this item!

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) vinyl squeak toy

  In 1979, Cribmates manufactured this item as part of a pair that also includes Olive Oyl (which we also have in stock at this time).  It is a 5.75" vinyl squeak toy of Popeye.  He is shown winking and wearing a white sailor's cap, red shirt collar, and blue shirt (which is the handle for this squeak toy) with a yellow anchor on it.  The item is in mint condition, having never been removed from its original packaging.   The package is in great shape, too, as is the cardboard header card.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) push puppet

  This is a 4.25" plastic push puppet showing Popeye standing atop a red round base.  He wears a white sailor's hat, a blue sailor's uniform with a white neckerchief, and black shoes.  He stands with both arms extended sideways and slightly upward, and has a black pipe in the right side of his mouth.  When the underside of the red base is depressed, Popeye collapses at the joints.  He was manufactured by Kohner Bros. sometime during the 1960s as part of a large collection of cartoon character tricky trapezes and push puppets that the company made at that time.  Popeye's gold foil sticker is intact and entirely legible, with minimal wear, and he himself is in nearly perfect condition.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) toy telephone

Here, we have three very similar items for sale, identical except for the color of their plastic.  They are plastic toy telephones--one red, one blue, one green--showing Popeye on the dial, making a telephone call.  They are all in mint, unused condition and all are still sealed inside of their original clear-plastic blisterpacks and still mounted on their original 9x6.75" cardboard mounting cards.  The blisterpacks are colorful, with images of Popeye holding SweePea, who is holding his own telephone near Popeye's face.  These items were manufactured in 1970 by Larami.  The red one has some crinkling of the blisterpack and some curling on the lower portion of the mounting card.  The blue one has some curling of the mounting card as well.  All of these toys are unused, though, and in original condition.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) vinyl squeak toy

  This 4.5" vinyl squeak toy of Popeye was manufactured by PlayMakers in 1984.  It shows Popeye wearing a white sailor's cap, black shirt with red collar and yellow buttons, bright blue pants, and black shoes.  He is standing with his left arm by his side, right arm raised with that hand in a fist.  The item is in mint condition, having never been removed from its original packaging.  The plastic bag is in fine shape, too, and the cardboard header card shows only light signs of wear.  When squeezed, Popeye gives off a loud squeaking sound.

POPEYE (Fleischer / King Features) vinyl & cloth doll

    In 1979, Uneeda released three vinyl-and-cloth dolls featuring Popeye cartoon characters:   Olive Oyl, Swee Pea, and this one of Popeye.  Popeye is approximately 7" tall.  He has a vinyl head and vinyl arms.  On his head, he wears a dark blue cap with a white band on it.  His yellow pipe is part of the head mold.  He wears a black cloth shirt with a red cloth collar, and yellow plastic buttons.  His legs/shoes are made of stuffed material and are blue (legs) and black (shoes).  Popeye has two tiny marks on his chin (that would probably come off with cleaning, which we did not want to do for fear of harming this otherwise-beautiful item).  Otherwise, he is in perfect condition.  He comes in his original box, which is in VG condition.  The cellophane window is completely intact and undamaged.  There are tears in the cardboard along the upper left and upper right corners of the box (no cardboard missing--just torn), and there is a crumpled area on the bottom left of the box's front side.  The box is complete, though, and generally in clear, displayable condition.  As you can see in the right-hand image, we also have one of these dolls loose, without a package.  It is in near mint condition, with no damage and just some minor discoloration on the back of Popeye's head.

POPEYE & SWEE PEA (Fleischer / King Features) bib

p1199087.jpg (39827 bytes)  This is a white cloth child's bib with red edging and red tie strings.  On the left side, Popeye is sitting on a red box with his arms outstretched toward Swee Pea, who is walking toward him with a bunch of red cans of overflowing Spinach.  For some reason, the spinach in the cans is not painted green but rather is outlined only faintly, visible only with a relatively close inspection of the bib's image.  The bib is 13" tall and 10.5" wide.  It is a copyrighted item, with the faint copyright initials "K.F.S." appearing just beneath Swee Pea's left foot.  There is one small, light stain beneath Popeye's right foot and another just above his left hand.   Otherwise, this item is in very nice condition and is completely free of damage.   It is in EX to EX+ condition overall.
