SPEEDY GONZALES (Warner Brothers) squeak toy

Here, we have a 5.75" vinyl squeak toy of Speedy Gonzales who is shown standing with his arms by his sides, hands in his pockets.  He wears a yellow sombrero, a red neckerchief, a green shirt, and white shorts.  When squeezed, this item gives off a gentle, shrill squeaking sound.  It was manufactured by Dakin in 1976 as part of a set that also included Yosemite Sam, Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, and Tweety (most of which are also in stock at this time, too).  Speedy is in NM+ condition, with no damage anywhere on him.  What appears to be a nip out of his sombrero is NOT damage at all.  Rather, it is the way the item was made, to give the sombrero some contour.

SPEEDY GONZALES (Warner Brothers) posable doll

This 15" doll of Speedy Gonzales is a very rare find!  It has bendable, posable arms and legs.  Speedy wears a yellow felt sombrero that says Aariba on the underside in black lettering.  He also wears a red felt neckerchief, a white cloth shirt, and white cloth pants.  The doll is in NM+ condition.  There is no indication anywhere on the item as to who made it, and it probably dates to the 1960s.  In all likelihood, this item was made for distribution in the Central or South American market, and it is an extremely tough item to find.  Just how rare is it?  Well, I (Hugh) have been a Warner Brothers cartoon memorabilia collector for more than 23 years, and this is only the second example of this doll that I have ever seen . . . the one in my own collection, and now this one offered for sale.  It is THAT rare!

SPEEDY GONZALES (Warner Brothers) Goofy Gram

During the early 1970s (1971 in this instance), Dakin manufactured two sets of Goofy Grams.   One set featured generic animals standing atop bases with appropriate sayings on them; the other set featured Looney Tunes characters standing atop faux-marble bases with sayings on them.  We have several of these items in stock, including this one of Speedy Gonzales.  Speedy wears a floppy soft vinyl sombrero, a red cloth bandana, a green cloth shirt, and white cloth pants.  He has posable arms and a swiveling head.   His base says "Have a Speedy Recovery!" in black lettering.   This item is in nearly perfect condition, with some very minor wear on the black lettering and a small folded-back area of the green felt protective covering on the underside of the base being the item's only real flaws.

SPEEDY GONZALES (Warner Brothers) vinyl hand puppet

During the late 1960s, this Speedy Gonzales all-vinyl hand puppet was part of a set that was released as a premium giveaway with toothpaste.  The other items in this set included Wile E Coyote, Road Runner, Sylvester, Tweety, and Yosemite Sam.  (We have the entire set in stock at this time.)  From top to bottom, Speedy measures 9".  He has a soft vinyl head and an all-white, thin vinyl body.  Overall, this item is in NM+ condition, with just a few tiny specks on the vinyl and no paint loss whatsoever.   The body of the hand puppet is wrinkled pretty significantly, but with proper display and keeping, it will straighten out and retain a nicer appearance quite easily.

SPEEDY GONZALES (Warner Brothers) firmly-stuffed doll

This unusual find is a 14" heavy-duty, firmly-stuffed cloth doll of Speedy Gonzales, who is shown standing with both arms extended sideways from his body.  He has a broad smile on his face, oversized, reinforced feet (that enable him to stand on his own), and wears a light yellow sombrero, a white shirt, and white shorts.  This doll was manufactured by Mighty Star in 1971.  Speedy's sombrero has one very small hole on the top, where the reinforcing wire that keeps its shape has worn a hole through the thin material of the hat.  (The wire is not damaged or "poking through" the material; but rather, it has literally worn a hole in that area from rubbing against it over the years.)  Overall, this doll is in EX+ condition.

SPEEDY GONZALES (Warner Brothers) large plastic doll

This relatively-rare Speedy Gonzales figure/doll stands 12" tall.  It is made of hollow lightweight plastic.  Speedy is wearing a grey sombrero, lavender felt neckerchief, lavender felt shorts, and a green felt shirt.  He has a black pompon for a nose and all the rest of him is plastic.  There is a small hole in the front of Speedy's forehead, where his plastic hair locks used to be but now no longer are.   There is a crack in the plastic on the top of his sombrero, running a few inches along the area where the sombrero meets the top of Speedy's head.  He has no other problems or flaws and, thus, is in VG+ to EX- condition overall.  This item was manufactured as part of a three-item Speedy Gonzales set sometime during the 1960s, with each figure/doll being a different size.  This particular Speedy Gonzales figure/doll from that set is the SMALLEST one they made, with the largest being nearly double this one's size.  The manufacturer and year of production are not listed anywhere on this item.

SPLINTER & KNOTHEAD (Woody Woodpecker / Walter Lantz) chalk wall plaques

This is a rarely-found pair of chalk or plaster wall hangings of Woody Woodpecker's niece and nephew, Splinter and Knothead.  Both of them are mounted onto the cardboard box shown in the picture, which is how they were originally sold.  He is 5.5" tall and is shown wearing a lime green bowtie.  She is just under 5" tall and is shown with a purple shirt collar and a black bow in her hair.  No copyright information is visible on these items, probably because it appears on the backs of the plaques in the area that is affixed to the cardboard box.  In all likelihood, they date to the 1960s.  He is in mint condition.  Unfortunately, she has not survived the years equally well:  At some point, her pony tail broke off and was reglued.  The regluing job is a neat one, but a few small crumbs of the chalk/plaster were too small to reglue and no longer exist with the item, leaving a few very small chunks missing.   As a result, determining the condition of this item is difficult--one is in mint condition and the other is in Fair condition, due to the damage and repair.  However you would choose to grade these wall plaques, they are attractive, bright, colorful, and quite difficult to find.

During the 1970s, the R. Dakin Company manufactured a few variations of the Laurel & Hardy figures.  This is the Stanley Laurel figure that is made of jointed vinyl, with cloth clothing.  (We have its counterpart, Oliver Hardy, in stock at this time too.)   Stanley is 8" tall.  He is wearing a black bowler, brown vinyl pants, blue cloth jacket with a white plastic button, white cloth shirt, black felt bowtie, and black vinyl shoes.  The vinyl is completely undamaged and has only tiny spots of minor paint wear.  (What appear to be two spots on his pants' vinyl are actually scanner light reflections; these areas are in perfect shape on the item.)  The clothing is entirely original and in very nice condition.  This item comes complete with its original cardboard hang tag.  Overall, it is in NM condition.
